It has been said that 'it is not true ... that Cartesian doubt is more radical than ancient scepticism' [Caton p. 29] (...) - this on the basis of a survey af some of our Protagorean and Pyrrhonian material. The Burman Text [Conversation with B.] shows that Descartes himself had a better understanding of his relation to the sceptical tradition (Burnyeat p. 46 fn.).
